Many people in Frederick County lack adequate health insurance, have financial difficulties, or do not yet have a good grasp of the English language and end up without basic health care – and too late they find themselves in the a hospital emergency room with acute conditions.
Since 2008 the Asian American Health Fair, now called the Frederick Community Health Fair, has served as a “first-line” screening for hundreds of people each year who come because they need basic diagnostic care to prevent acute events. Our fair is designed to be culturally and linguistically diverse to break down the barriers that keep people from receiving health care.
At our Health Fair, visitors can receive basic vital-sign screening (eye/hearing exams, monitoring of blood pressure and heart) as well as more in-depth screenings for Hepatitis B, HIV and breast cancer, along with consultation with primary care and specialty doctors, and flu shots—all at no cost.
New in 2013 with our host and partner, the Frederick Indoor Sports Complex (link here) we will celebrate the importance of a strong physical fitness lifestyle with family activities centered on fun and wellness. Visit the Family Fun Zone to try out recreation classes, sports and other fun stuff!
We will be offering enrollment in the new Maryland Health Connection, the insurance exchange resulting from the Affordable Care Act. Open Enrollment begins October 1, so you can be one of the first to sign up! Visit our Door to Healthcare Webpage for more info!
